The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals took place a few days ago and has given the football fans across the globe some captivating matches to look forward to. Arguably, the most enticing one among them will be the clash between the reigning Spanish and European champions Barcelona and the 2014 Champions League finalists Atlético Madrid. The two sides will lock horns at Camp Nou on April 5th and the return leg will take place at the Vicente Calderon the following week.
While Barcelona boasts one of the most lethal attacking force in the continent, Atlético has the most effective defensive line and this makes the upcoming match all the more exciting.
The meeting between these two Spanish rivals is going to be a replay of the 2013-14 quarter-final in which Atlético came out on top. Diego Simione's squad will look to replicate that result. The Catalans though will try to turn the tables this time around as the favourites going into the match, as Luis Enrique's squad has come out on top in each of the last six meetings.
As always Lionel Messi will have a very important role to play. The charismatic Argentine has scored a whopping 25 goals in his 27 appearances against the Los Rojiblancos, including three hat tricks. The defending champions also have the likes of Neymar and Suarez who can change the course of a match in a matter of minutes.
In terms of physicality, The back-line of Barcelona is not the most imposing one. But, as long as they stick to their game-plan and play as a unit, it can be tough to break down. Atlético Madrid on the other hand are fast, aggressive and hostile. They may not play the prettiest brand of football at times, but they usually do enough to get the job done.
So, who will come out on top in this epic clash among the two giants of Spanish football? We just have to wait and watch.
