Morocco open their campaign in Russia with a group B opener against Iran on Friday, June 15. Both teams are underdogs in a group B that also contains heavyweights Portugal ad Euro defending Champions Portugal. A win for either side will increase their chances as they face the more favoured sides.
The North Africans, coached by former Ivory Coast manager Herve Renard, have had a good year so far. They beat African powerhouse Nigeria in February and held Ukraine to a goalless draw on 31st May in a warm up match. Khalib Boutalib and Manuel Da Costa are key players to look out for in the squad.
Iran’s year has been quite a contrast to Morocco’s, with their only notable win coming against Algeria in March. Mehdi Taremi and Sardar Azmoun were on target in that match. The duo have been a formidable striking partnership and will carry the weight of the Asian Confederation nation’s hopes on their shoulders in Russia.
