Switzerland welcome Northern Ireland for the second leg of the UEFA confederation world Cup Playoffs on November 12. The sides will be playing for a last chance to get a ticket to next summer’s event in Russia after finishing second in their respective groups.
The hosts have held the better head to head record in four matches between the sides before these playoffs (W2 D1 L1) but that is old history given their last meeting was in an August 2004 friendly. Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri will be a key figure for the home side in this one. The diminutive but powerful midfielder produced some magic moments for the Swiss in last year’s Euros and will actively seek to help his side qualify for the globe’s top sporting event.
Northern Ireland has been on a great run sine the Euros and would love to ice that with a world cup qualification. Will Grigg will lead the side in the quest to have his name sang in Russia in a similar fashion to the Euro’s Will Grigg is on fire’ tune we heard in last summer’s tournament in France.
