Portugal and the Ukraine meet at the Estádio da Luz on Friday, 22nd March for theirfirst European Championship qualifying match.
Portugal and the Ukraine play their first Euro 2020 qualifying match this weekend, and all eyes are sure to be on Portugal’s star player, Ronaldo, when he returns to his hometown.
Since the World Cup, Portugal’s form has been improving, they have defeated Poland, Italy and Scotland in recent months and they are sure to be feeling confident ahead of this game. The Ukraine has had more mixed results, they recently drew with Turkey and before that lost to Slovakia. However, they did hold Italy to a draw and beat the Czech Republic, and should not be dismissed out of hand.
The teams have not played each other since the 1996 World Cup, when each side won one of their two encounters. Portugal are currently ranked sixth in the world while the Czech Republic are forty-fourth. They are in a relatively straightforward qualifying group, but they will want to secure the full three points, which could make this into a more exciting game than anticipated.
