Southampton and Chelsea will play the eighth match of the Premier League season on Sunday, 6th October at St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton and Chelsea meet this weekend at St Mary’s Stadium for the eighth match of the Premier League season. Southampton are fourteenth in the league with 7 points having won 2 games, drawn 1 and lost 4. Chelsea are seventh in the league with 11 points having won 3 games, drawn 2 and lost 2.
Last week Southampton lost 2 – 1 to Tottenham Hotspur and this came after they defeated Portsmouth 0 – 4 in the Football League cup. Prior to that they lost 3 – 1 to Bournemouth, but they did defeated Sheffield United 0 – 1 and hold Manchester United to a 1 – 1 draw. Chelsea overcame Brighton 2 – 0 last week and defeated Grimsby Town 7 – 1 in the Cup. Before that, they lost to Liverpool and Valencia but they did defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 – 5 early in September.
The teams last played in January this year and the game ended in a goalless draw. However, Chelsea won their previous seven encounters in all competitions dating back to February 2016. Southampton last defeated Chelsea in October 2015. Despite this, with Southampton playing at home, this could be a very close and hard fought match.
