Southampton and Liverpool meet this weekend at St. Mary’s Stadium for the second match of the Premier League season. After Southampton’s poor start to the season, they will be desperate to save face, while Liverpool will be eager to continue in their winning ways.
Southampton started the season by losing 0 – 3 to Burnley. This came after a series of good results in preseason games during which they defeated Koln, Feyenoord, Guangzhou R&F and Preston North End. Liverpool defeated Norwich City 4 – 1 in their opening game, which came after they lost on penalties to Manchester City in the Community Shield.
Over the years, the teams have faced each other numerous times in the league and other competitions. Most recently, they played in April this year and Liverpool won the game 1 – 3. Liverpool also won their previous three meetings, while in 2017 Southampton defeated Liverpool once and one of their meetings ended in a draw. Since 2005, they have played 18 times with Southampton winning 6 games, Liverpool winning 9 and three games ending in a draw.
